Metal effect powder coatings include silver aluminum powder, pearlescent powder, gold bronze powder, champagne powder and other series, which can create strong metallic luster, three-dimensional layering and dynamic visual effect on the surface of workpieces. At present, there are two mainstream production processes for metal effect powder in the industry: dry blending process and thermal bonding process. The dry blending process simply mixes finished solid powder with metal pigments and pearlescent pigments through a mixer. The process is simple and low in cost, but the combination force between pigments and powder particles is weak. During electrostatic spraying, metal pigments are prone to floating, precipitation and uneven distribution, resulting in inconsistent local metallic luster, color difference and dark spots on the coating surface, which can only be used for low-end decorative scenarios.
The thermal bonding process is the mainstream production technology for high-end metallic powder. By precise temperature heating and low-speed stirring, the metal pigments are firmly bonded to the surface of powder particles, forming an integrated structure of “powder particle + metal pigment”. The bonded powder has stable pigment distribution, no floating powder during spraying, uniform metallic texture, strong three-dimensional sense and high luster consistency, which can meet the high-standard decorative requirements of automobiles and high-end home appliances. However, the bonding process has extremely strict requirements on temperature, stirring speed and time parameters, and improper control will lead to batch scrapping.
