Causes and Improvement Methods of Powder Coating Yellowing Defects

White, beige, light gray, and other light-color powder coatings are widely used in home appliances, medical equipment, indoor decoration, and office facilities, and their color purity and whiteness are core quality evaluation indicators. Yellowing defects refer to the phenomenon that the cured coating film turns yellow, dark, or has yellow color difference, including instantaneous yellowing after curing and delayed yellowing after long-term use. Slight yellowing will cause batch color difference of products, and serious yellowing will directly lead to product scrapping, which is one of the most difficult quality problems to control in light-color powder production.

Process over-baking yellowing is the most common instantaneous yellowing problem in production. Each powder coating formula has a matching standard curing temperature and time range. If the curing oven temperature is too high or the baking time is too long beyond the process standard, the resin molecular chain of the powder will undergo thermal decomposition and oxidation reaction, producing yellow oxide substances, resulting in obvious yellowing of the coating film. In addition, uneven temperature distribution in the curing oven will lead to inconsistent baking degree of workpieces in different positions, resulting in partial yellowing and overall color disorder of the batch products.

Raw material and formula problems are the fundamental causes of yellowing defects. Ordinary low-quality polyester and epoxy resins have poor thermal stability and are easy to oxidize and yellow at high temperatures. Insufficient addition of anti-yellowing agents and UV stabilizers in the formula cannot inhibit the oxidation reaction of the resin. Impure pigments and fillers containing heavy metal impurities will also accelerate the yellowing aging of the coating film. In addition, expired and damp raw materials will undergo chemical deterioration, and the powder produced is extremely prone to yellowing after curing.

Environmental photo-oxidation yellowing belongs to delayed yellowing, which occurs after the product is put into use. Light-color coatings exposed to outdoor ultraviolet radiation and air oxidation for a long time will gradually age, the resin cross-linking structure will be destroyed, and the surface will slowly turn yellow and dark, resulting in reduced gloss and poor aesthetics. This kind of yellowing is closely related to the weather resistance of the powder formula and is the key difficulty affecting the long-term service quality of outdoor light-color products.

To solve powder coating yellowing defects comprehensively, manufacturers need to carry out full-link optimization. First, optimize the formula system, select high-weather-resistance and anti-yellowing special resins, add high-efficiency UV stabilizers and anti-oxidants in a targeted manner, and use high-purity and impurity-free pigments and fillers to eliminate raw material yellowing hidden dangers.
